Xi Jinping 習近平 — “Message to Compatriots in Taiwan” 告台灣同胞書

A Verbatim Performance of Xi Jinping, the leader of China, delivers a speech on the 40th anniversary of the "Message to Compatriots in Taiwan." The original video link is here.

My intention isn’t to see people with different beliefs argue with each other. Instead, I want to use verbatim performance to explore the following questions:

"What do you feel or think as you watch a female Taiwanese embodies Xi Jinping’s words and gestures? Would you change your perspectives or develop different insights when gender and nationality are reversed?”

"An America that takes a lot more seriously"

Interview conducted by Rita Liu on October 21, 2020.

This video portrait is part of Portraits US: Election 2020, a new Verbatim Performance Lab (VPL) project aimed at exploring viewpoints and perspectives of people living and working throughout the United States and internationally during the 2020 election cycle.

What are the experiences and viewpoints of people living and working in the United States and/or internationally during the 2020 election cycle? How does the re-telling of someone’s story or perspective, told by another different bodied person, affect how an audience receives that information?
